VERSION: 17 • DATE: 18-JUL-25

SYSTEM:

Summary: Modern Acol; Weak NT; three Weak Twos; Weak Jump Overcalls; TAPS; Jacoby 2NT; Splinters; Weak Responder Jump-shift; Unusual 2NT; Michaels; Negative Doubles; Modified Pinpoint Astro; RKCB 1430. Discards: McKenney in NT; Attitude in Trumps

• With 4-4-3-2 shape and 15-19 points, open the senior 4-card suit unless both are majors
• Weak Jump Overcalls (5-10 HCP. 6+ cards at 2-level; 7+ cards at 3-level)
RKCB 1430.
• 1NT rebid is 15-17. • Jump to 2NT is 18-19. • 1x:2y, 2NT is 15-19(GF).
Weak Responder Jump-shift — e.g. 1:2 — shows 0-5 HCP and a 6+ card suit.
• Negative Doubles: e.g. 1:(1):Dbl promises 4 hearts and 6+ points.
• And 1/1:(1):Dbl promises exactly four spades, whereas 1/1:(1):1 promises 5+ spades.
• With 6-9 points, 3-card support and no biddable 4+ card suit, responder raises opener's 1x to 2x with a picture in the suit, and bids 1NT without.
• A bid of the fourth suit at the cheapest level is game-forcing, except for 1:1, 1:1.
• Opening 4-4-4-1 hands: TAPS
•• Red-suit singleton: open 1;
•• Black-suit singleton: open 1.
STANDARD BIDDING:

OPENER:

• A pre-empt in 1st or 2nd seat must contain either two of the top three honours or three of the top five.
RESPONSES:

• 1NT by responder promises 8-10 points if RHO has overcalled and 6-9 if not.
• 1:2 promises 5+ hearts and 10+ points.
• With a 4-card major and a longer minor, responder should always show the major on the first round unless he has a game-forcing hand.
• If Responder repeats his suit at the 2-level, it promises 6-9 points and a 6-card suit; a jump-bid of the suit at the 3-level promises 10-12 points.
• A new suit bid by responder at the 2-level after an opposition overcall usually promises 5+ cards—e.g. 1:(1):2.
• 2NT response to a Weak Two shows 15+ points.
• 2NT:3 shows the minors, as does 2:2, 2NT:3.
REVERSES & JUMP-SHIFTS:

• Opener reverse (e.g. 1:1, 2) shows 16+ points or 5 losers.
•• In reply, 2NT shows a minimum responder hand, expecting opener to rebid 3 of her first suit unless wanting to drive to game.
• Responder reverse (e.g. 1:1, 2:2) is game-forcing, shows 13+ points and may be a 3-card suit.
• Opener jump-shift (e.g. 1:1, 2) shows 19+ points.
OPENER REBIDS:

• 1x:1NT, 2NT shows 17-18 balanced.
• 1x:2x, 2NT shows 17-18 balanced.
• Level-of-fit responses to a Weak Two on 0-14, and are never invitational.
• (1x)(1NT):Dbl is for take-out, usually showing a shortage in suit x.
NT OVERCALLS:

• 1NT Overcall in the DIRECT seat is 15-19 with a stopper; systems are on.
• 1NT Overcall in the PROTECTIVE seat is 11-14 usually with a stopper; systems are on.
• 2NT Overcall over a Weak Two is 15-19 with a stopper.
• 2NT Overcall over 1NT promises 5:5 in the minors, less than 15 HCP, and about 7 losers.
OVERCALLER'S REBID:

• A new suit bid by overcaller —e.g.(1):1:(No):3, (No):3—shows a strong, two-suited shape unable to bid Michaels or the Unusual.
PARTNER DOUBLES:

• In reply to partner's double of a 1-level suit bid:
•• On 0-5 points, bid a new suit at the lowest level, but pass if RHO bids.
•• On 6-9, bid as if partner had opened 1 of your preferred suit.
•• On 10-12, bid at the 3-level.
•• With 13+, bid game.
STANDARD LEADS:

• For lead purposes, the 10 on its own is not an honour. If it is the highest card in the suit you lead, treat the suit as a nothing/rubbish suit.'

1NT OPENING:
12-14
RESPONSES TO 1NT:
Stayman; Red-suit Transfers: unless opponents double, Robson Super-Accepts with 4-card support (2NT shows 4•3•3•3 & 14; 3 shows all other shapes & 14; 3M shows 12-13); McKendrick.
• After they overcall, double is for take-out and other gadgets are off.
• After they double, Halmic:
•• Pass shows 4-3-3-3 and 0-10 HCP, or 7+ and happy to play in 1NTX;
••• If 1NTX is passed back to opener and opener has a five-card suit, opener will bid 2 of that suit.
•• XX shows a 5+ card suit to which opener bids a 2 relay;
•• 2 of a suit by responder promises 4 cards in suit plus 4 in a senior suit, to which opener passes with 3+ cards or bids the next suit up).

3RD SEAT OPENINGS:

• 1 and 1 openings may be on 9 HCP.
•• In response, 2 is an artificial enquiry showing a limit raise to 3/3 if partner has not opened light. If partner has opened light, he bids 2 (Drury).
• Weak Twos may be five-card suits.
• 1, 1, 1NT and 2 openings in 3rd seat will always be of at least normal strength, as will all openings in 1st and 2nd seats.
4TH SEAT OPENINGS:
• In 4th seat, only open at the 1-level if your HCP plus the number of spades you hold ≥ 15

• 8+ HCP and no good 5+ card suit: 2NT, or double if RHO overcalls.

• With 5-7 HCP, opener rebids 3 of her suit.
• With 8+ HCP, opener rebids 3 of a side-suit containing either 4+ cards or a stopper

TO SHOW 4+ CARD SUPPORT AND 13+ POINTS AFTER A 1/ OPENING:

Jacoby 2NT with no short suit.

MEANING OF 1:4 AND 1:4:
around 5-9 HCP and 5+ card trump support
SLAM ENQUIRY:

• 4NT AFTER SUIT BID: RKCB 1430. 5NT then asks for your cheapest unbid King. (If none, bid six of trump suit.)
• 4NT AFTER 1NT or 2NT: Quantitative
• 4 GERBER: Immediately after any natural NT bid. 4:0, 4NT:3. Then 5 asks for number of Kings, with 5:0.
