Historical Notes
The 1st Claygate Girl Guide Company came into being in 1920 under the leadership of Mrs Hamilton and Miss Bolton, who in due course were succeeded by Mrs Rossiter and Mrs Philbin. The Guides flourished and expanded over the years, and established their own headquarters in Foxwarren, off Coverts Road. Unfortunately, the Guides' headquarters was almost totally destroyed by fire on 26th June 1956. The cause of the fire was not thought to be of an accidental nature.
By their own money raising efforts and with the help of many donations, the Guides rebuilt a new permanent headquarters in Foxwarren in 1958 at a cost of £2,300. The Guides were, in 1983 at least, well supported with active Brownie Packs and Ranger units.
